Pagliacci's Fools

It's All Up In the Air

Arts for Every Heart

Except for the displays on the ground, that is, at the 4th Annual Marina Air Faire & Fly In. You'll find plenty to see in the skies and on the runway at Marina Municipal Airport on Saturday, October 19.

This year's Fly In honors the fighter pilots and aces of World War II. In addition to fly-bys of P-51s and Stearman bi-planes, and rides in a 1943 Beechcraft Twin or a Stearman bi-plane, there'll be a great static display of classic planes: an F8f Bearcat, P-40 Warhawk, AT-6s, an NA-50, Wacos, and a rare model A P-51.

At 1:00pm, a Fighter Ace Symposium presents a panel of great WWII aces, including P-40 Ace Jim Morehead, P-38 Ace Herb Ross, P-47 Ace Bud Mahurin, and F6F Hellcat Ace Butch Voris. It's free, but reserve your seat by calling 408-725-8095 or emailing [email protected]

Other fun features of the Air Faire include a display of custom, antique, classic and hot rods by the Salinas Valley Street Rodders, booths selling aviation and automotive goods, activities for kids, and more. Call 831-384-9155 or visit www.marina-air.com for more details.
One of California's biggest performing arts festivalsin terms of variety and durationbrings dozens of actors, dancers, singers and artistes of all sorts to Monterey County, October 16-27. The California Performing Arts Festival offers dazzling events every evening; on weekends, performances run throughout the day, held all around the county.

Among the featured acts, don't miss
  • Obo Addy, the Ghanian-born drummer who presents a concert of pure, powerful, Ga drumming.

  • Ballet Stars of Moscow, a troupe of ten dancers, drawn from the Bolshoi, the Moscow Classical Ballet, and the Stanislavsky Theatre Ballet, presenting classic pas de deux from the great Russian tradition.

  • Shylock, a controversial one-man play by Mark Leiren-Young, performed by Ron Campbell, in which an actor defends Shakespeare's character Shylock.

  • The Radio Project of Pagliacci's Fools (pictured above). This Oakland-based troupe of artists, led by Vini Beachem, present a 'theater of the mind' as they perform and record before a studio audience.
