Sharon Isbin

Escape from Routine

Guitarist Extraordinaire

How about dipping into something more exciting than a mocha latte next weekend (November 7-10)? Like a barrel sampling of estate-bottled Syrahor perhaps an elegant new Chardonnay-Pinot Blanc blend?

The opportunity will arise, frequently, during Monterey's Great Wine Escape Weekend. This four-day fandango, orchestrated by the Monterey County Vintners and Growers Association, is set up like a rolling house-party: the fun moves from vineyards to ballrooms to restaurants to winerieseven to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Saturday is dedicated to vineyard tours, either self-drive or by escorted coach. The five coach tours also include a seminar or special event, including tasting barrel samples of five varietals and a lecture on "Hedonistic Winemaking Based on the Primordial Hunting & Gathering Mind." Other events include live music and book signings, gourmet cheeses and unusual wines.

Classical guitarist Sharon Isbin brings the artistry and fire that has won her two Grammy Awards to Pacific Grove as part of the Carmel Music Society's 2002-03 winter season, performing on Wednesday, November 6.

Sharon Isbin is one of the greatest classical players since Segovia (with whom she studied) and Williams; she was the first classical guitarist since 1972 to win a Grammy as Best Instrumental Soloist. Isbin enjoys experimenting with genres that allow her finely turned playing to cross over to a wider audience. "Wayfaring Stranger," recorded with mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer, presented a series of French, Spanish and American folk songs; 2000's "Journey to the Amazon" brought together Brazilian percussionist Thiago de Mello and saxophonist Paul Winter. "Dreams of the World" allowed her to roam the globe musically.

Her one-only concert in Monterey County is likely to feature pieces by Bach and Joaquin Rodrigo, whose "Concierto de Aranjuez" is one of the mainstays of the classical repertory, as well as original compositions from her latest CDs.
