Monterey Jazz Festival TomatoFest
Lions & Tigers & Dares, Oh My!
Monterey County Insalata Mista

To borrow the title of Dave Brubeck's stellar 1995 release, the 2002 Monterey Jazz Festival puts "Old Tigers"like Mr. Brubeck himself, The Heath Brothers, Etta James, and Randy Westoninto the (Jimmy Lyons Stage) Arena with "Young Lions" performers. The latter include Grammy Award-winner Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman (who both played on the "Young Lions & Old Tigers" recording), Don Byron, and the winners of the 32nd Annual High School Jazz Competition.

They come to Monterey on September 20-22, to revel in the nation's oldest jazz festival, and to take a few musical risks, too. Brubeck played at the first Festival in 1958; he'll be revisiting "The Real Ambassadors," his 1962 hit, this year. Randy Weston, a Monterey-area legend, will be re-interpreting his classic 'West Coast Cool Jazz' recording, "Monterey '66," Roy Hargrove will be debuting a new group, and Don Byron, the Festival's commissioned artist, will premiere a new piece. Also raring to set the place alight are the "lion-cubs"the kids who won the Festival's school competition.

Grounds admissions sell out early in the day, so don't delay making your plans. For more information, call 925-275-9255 or visit www.montereyjazzfestival.org.
Early September is the peak of tomato season, and the lettuce harvest is in full swing in the Salinas Valley. Put the two together, and you have a recipe for some delicious food festivals.

TomatoFest (September 15, Carmel Valley) brings together hundreds of the world's most flavorful heirloom tomatoes in a gala tasting jamboree that also includes olive oils and wine. You can buy seeds, too, for prize-winning plants with names like Box Car Willie, Kellogg's Breakfast (the color of orange juice), Peppermint (red and pink striped), and Mortgage Lifter. Julia Child is this year's special guest: she'll be presented with a tomato named in honor of her 90th birthday.

Taste of the Valley celebrates the bounty of the Salinas Valley, with local growers serving up tastily-dressed samples of tender lettuces and vegetables. There'll be cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and more. At Sherwood Hall (Salinas Rodeo Grounds), September 19; call 831-759-7321 for information.
