Dance With Life

Painting the Land

With choreography described as "an infectious blend of modern, African and ballet techniques, with a touch of humor," the Lula Washington Dance Theatre tells powerful tales of the African American experience. The dancers move easily through musical styles that include jazz, blues, gospel and Afro-Caribbean grooves.

The company performs Lula Washington's "Mahal Dances," featuring the music of Taj Mahal, at a one-night-only performance, April 24, in the World Theater of CalState University at Monterey Bay.

Artist David Ligare lives and paints in Monterey County, drawing his inspiration from the grandeur and serenity of the landscape. This spring, he exhibits in two galleries.

On April 27, The Pastures of Heaven: Paintings by David Ligare opens at the National Steinbeck Center, Salinas. Many of the paintings here, including "Landscape With Red Pony," evoke the same reverence for the land that John Steinbeck felt as he wrote his novels.

Ligare is also represented in the Monterey Museum of Art's "Land and Legacy: Plein Air Paintings from the Big Sur Land Trust," on display until May 5. Forty-seven Californian artists were invited to paint in the 20,000 acres protected by the Trust; the resulting artworks are available to purchase during the exhibition.
