TomatoFest
Auto Fest with a Cherry on Top
Monterey Count Insalata Mista

Cherry's Jubilee is to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as Champagne is to Original Coke. It's a little less focused on elegance, a lot more focused on fun, and an all-around blast for car enthusiasts.

Not just any old car, of course. Cherry's Jubilee requires that the car in question be at least 25 years old; the emphasis is on vehicles produced for the American market between 1945 and 1965. Picture the cars in films like "American Graffiti" or "Peggy Sue Got Married" and you have the right era.

The event runs from September 6-8, and includes 'show and shine' displays, scenic drive tours, a lively night on Cannery Row, and a merchants fair at Laguna Seca Raceway. For more information, call 831-759-1836.
Early September is the peak of tomato season, and the lettuce harvest is in full swing in the Salinas Valley. Put the two together, and you have a recipe for some delicious food festivals.

TomatoFest (September 15, Carmel Valley) brings together hundreds of the world's most flavorful heirloom tomatoes in a gala tasting jamboree that also includes olive oils and wine. You can buy seeds, too, for prize-winning plants with names like Box Car Willie, Kellogg's Breakfast (the color of orange juice), Peppermint (red and pink striped), and Mortgage Lifter. Julia Child is this year's special guest: she'll be presented with a tomato named in honor of her 90th birthday.

Taste of the Valley celebrates the bounty of the Salinas Valley, with local growers serving up tastily-dressed samples of tender lettuces and vegetables. There'll be cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and more. At Sherwood Hall (Salinas Rodeo Grounds), September 19; call 831-759-7321 for information.
