Blue Angels

California Air Show

These Rare Lands

Loops, hammerheads, avalanches, lomcovaks, torque rolls, tail slides, spinning towers, and inverted spins… Those are the thrills filling the air over Salinas Airport on October 4-6, as the California International Airshow Salinas zooms into town.

High-speed stars of the 2002 show include the U. S. Navy Blue Angels flight team, performing precision aerobatics with six identical Navy jets, and an appearance of the amazing F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter. Aerobatic wizardry includes the world's most highly modified performance biplane, the Oracle Challenger Special, flown by aerobatic wizard Sean D. Tucker; Eddie Andreini's dare-devil Stearman stunts; and Manfred Radius, "the king of glider aerobatics."

The show kicks off Friday at 5:30pm with flights and ground displays that end in rousing fireworks; Saturday and Sunday, shows run non-stop from 11:00am. For tickets and more information, call 1-888-845-SHOW, or visit
Deer and bears, glassy lakes and smouldering fires, glaciers in the grip of winter and molten sunrises. The only element missing from the panoramic photographs taken by Stan Jorstad (in These Rare Lands, at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, Sept 23-Nov 17) is humankind.

Jorstad's foremost goal is to present nature as you would see it if you could but stand where he stood. Jorstad, now 82, still hikes the lesser-known trails of our parks year-round, and will wait for hoursor daysto capture the perfect light upon the panorama he wishes to photograph.

This is nature as pure as film and camera can capture it. These pictures are not computer 'enhanced' or manipulated. To Stan Jorstad, saving a forest in a computer is no substitute for saving the actual forest in the wilderness.

The Museum is located at the corner of Forest & Central Avenues; free admission; opening hours are Tues-Sun, 10am-5pm. For more information, call 831-648-5716.
