10th Annual Winemakers Celebration National Steinbeck Center
The Wonders of Wine-Making
Celebrating John Steinbeck's Legacy

August 10 is your opportunity to stop wondering and start learning aboutand enjoyingthe mysteries of the vine. That's the date of the 10th Annual Winemakers Celebration, held in Monterey's Custom House Plaza.

While you shouldn't attempt to open a winery armed with a box of mail-order vinestock and a copy of The Idiot's Guide to Wine-Making, you can absorb a remarkable amount of interesting and useful information, as well as some truly delicious wine. There'll be a display of all the varietals grown in the county and another on sustainable agriculture practices, demonstrations of pruning techniques and cooperage (the art of making wine barrels), plus information on best practices for wine storage.

And of course, you'll have plenty of opportunities to sample the products of Monterey's 39 wineries! For tickets and information, call 831-375-9400, or visit www.montereywines.org.
John Steinbeck relished his reputation as a scrapper, and he seemed to go out of his way to provoke controversythrough his choice of words, his themes, his stubborn indignation on behalf of 'the little guy.' Perhaps his greatest legacy to the new century is the challenge he continues to pose to thinking readers.

In this centennial year, the annual Steinbeck Festival contemplates the novelist's legacy, with an intriguing series of talks, walks, and special events held August 1-4. Judith Krug, of the American Library Association's Office of Intellectual Freedom, discusses the banning of Steinbeck's books; noted scholars compare Steinbeck, Faulkner and Hemingway; and the Executive Director of the California Council for the Humanities talks about the state-wide initiative to read The Grapes of Wrath.

There'll be a panel discussion about Steinbeck in schools today, walking and bus tours to sites associated with Steinbeck, performances by The Western Stage of "Of Mice and Men," movie screenings, and more. For details and ticket information, visit the web site or call 831-796-3833.
