Coming Through
The Rye

They come to haggle, to probe provenance, to muse on the merits of a Mission table versus a Tiffany lampshade...

They're all gatheredpros, connoisseurs and the curious alikeamong the 200-plus dealers' booths at the Moss Landing Antique Fair. This annual open-air jamboree of both "junque" and fine antiques takes place Sunday, July 28. Food booths open for breakfast at 7:00am, serving vendors and avid collectors who want to be the first to carry off a vintage treasure.

For more information, contact the Moss Landing Chamber of Commerce at 831-633-4501 or 633-1660.
The skirl of the pipes heralds the start of the 35th Annual Scottish Games and Celtic Festival, held at Monterey County's Toro Park on August 3 & 4. From the minute the first drum major enters the field till the last caber is tossed, the event is full of pageantry.

The athletics component includes traditional heavy events, such as tossing the hammer and putting the stone. Entrants in the drumming and pipe bands competitions will perform marches, jigs, and the haunting solo notes of the pibroch. Bonnie lassies and sturdy young gents will display the leaps and twirls of the Highland fling, Blue Bonnets and Flora MacDonald's Fancy, and the tricky Sword Dance.

All weekend, there'll be special live bands from Ireland and Scotland, sheepdog herding trials, authentic food and drink, and more. For full schedule and ticket information, call 831-647-6311, or visit
