Automotive Excellence
Wine, Dine and... Swine?

Monterey in mid-August sees a most impressive array of automobiles of every vintage and marque, all polished and primped to look their best. At the center of it all is the Classic Car Week, August 14-18.

It kicks off Wednesday with the first viewings at the 11th Annual Blackhawk Collection Exposition in Pebble Beach, held at The Lodge at Pebble Beach (free with Pebble Beach gate fee). On Thursday, the beauties entered in the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance take a 50-mile tour around the Monterey Peninsula, while the 13th Christie's International Motor Cars Sale opens for viewing at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center.

On Friday, the Concorso Italiano brings a bevy of Italian cars out to Quail Lodge, while the 14th Annual Monterey Sports Car Auction begins at the Doubletree Hotel. Excitement continues through the weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, with the 29th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races, which run through Sunday with racing daily 1:00-5:00pm. The concluding drama is the 52nd Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, with both vintage vehicles and the latest concept cars on display.
Yep, that's the theme of the 2002 Monterey County Fair, and it fits perfectly.

The Wine Garden presents some of the fine wines made in the county with daily tastings from 3:00pm until the fair closes.

As for food, what fair would be complete without homemade pie contests (apple on Friday, berry on Sunday), the Family Secret Homemade Ice Cream Contest (Sun), or the Nobody Makes Better Fudge Contest (Thur). Star chefs from local restaurants will be demonstrating their secrets. And there's plenty of fair fare to nibble on during the live entertainment: The Nelsons blues band (Thur), Mariachi Jalisco (Sun), and headliners Tower of Power on Friday night.

Oh yes, the swine. In addition to Valentine's Dancing Pigs, don't miss the Best Dressed Goat contest, the fancy poultry judging, or even Lamb Leading and Swine Showmanship. Just join us at the fairgrounds, August 13-18; more details at www.montereycountyfair.com.
