Monterey Maritime Museum Pagliacci's Fools

Can you canoe?

Arts for Every Heart

When these volunteers are finished, they'll take to the bay in a "tule boat", a craft made of tule reeds by the Rumsien peoples who lived along the Monterey Bay coast long before Spanish explorers like Sebastian Vizcaino arrived in 1602.

The boat has been made as part of the celebrations surrounding the 10th anniversary of the Monterey Maritime Museum, and will be given a ceremonial launching on October 26. On that day, the museum (which is located on Monterey's historic Custom House Plaza) will be open to visitors for free, plus Native American story-telling and song sessions, games for kids, and much more.

For a very different Halloween, come down to Monterey Bay for the 'Dark of the Moon'. First, there's a talk in the State Historic Park's theater about Monterey's fishing industry; then the audience files out onto Fisherman's Wharf for a short cruise over the fishing grounds that made the fortunes of Cannery Row.
