Saluting Steinbeck's Centennial

Come Have a Whale of a Good Time
His books caught the spirit of their times flawlessly, his words painted pictures of places and people that have lingered long after the author's passing: Cannery Row when the sardines still swam, a despairing family of Okies in The Grapes of Wrath, a nation in transition in Travels with Charley.

Come join us in February for the birthday celebration of the year, honoring John Steinbeck with proclamations and parties all around Salinas and Monterey all month long. The highlights include festivities at the National Steinbeck Center on February 23 and gala celebration at Monterey's Convention Center on February 27. Click here for a calendar of events, or visit www.steinbeck.org.
Winter is whale-watching season off the Monterey coast. From now through May, a vast underwater procession of gray whales glides beneath the Pacific's surface, as they make their way from their winter breeding grounds around Baja California to the Bering Sea.

Whale-watching boats set off daily (weather and seas permitting) from Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey and Moss Landing. They are escorted by naturalists who help guests spot and identify whales and other ocean inhabitants, including orca whales, dolphins, porpoises, and sea lions.
