HistoryFest Monterey
HistoryFest Monterey
Seventh Big Sur JazzFest

The past is like a fairy tale to some folks: a little hard to believe in, because there's nothing left to smell or taste or hear.

HistoryFest Monterey 2002, held April 27, will change your mind. It presents "living history" at more than a dozen fascinating venues all around Old Monterey, including the Presidio (where the 11th Cavalry is recreated), Custom House (look for the old salt and his monkey out front), and Colton Hall (where costumed dancers bring the last days of Mexico's rule to life).

Pick up a festival 'passport' when you arrive, and collect stamps for all the places of history you visit.

The coast is magnificent, the redwoods majestic, and the soundtrackat least for the weekend of May 3-5is superb. That's when the Big Sur JazzFest takes over Pfeiffer-Big Sur State Park and a half-dozen-plus other venues, bringing a tempting array of jazz styles to the Central Coast.

All the artists bring verve, creativity and passion to their playing. Don't miss Omar Sosa's quartet (pictured above), Kitty Margolis and Friends, Eric Person & Meta-Four (performing at the Henry Miller Library), or the Scott Amendola Band at the Big Sur River Inn. Headlining the Sunday in the Park concert: The Brad Mehldau Trio.
