Brazilian Guitar Quartet
65th Annual Bach Festival
Hurrah! for the Red, White & Blue!

One of the Monterey Peninsula's premier music eventsthe Carmel Bach Festivalis celebrating its 65th year with a splendid program of concerts, master classes, and talks. The event spans three weeks, from July 27 through August 4, with programs every day of the week.

Regular Festival-goers will find familiar events on the schedule, including the Intermezzo recitals, intimate chamber music presented in All Saints Church, Carmel, and Carmel Mission Basilica; Twilight concerts such as "Love Letters from the 18th Century" in the Chapel in the Forest; and the main concert series, with performers like the Brazilian Guitar Quartet (pictured above) and the controversial Vivaldi virtuousos Red Priest.

For 2002, new features include three Family Concerts that help introduce young listeners to classical music; special performances at Asilomar in Pacific Grove; and Guests of the Fest. The last features soloists and groups playing at high noon and at 9:00pm in Candlelight Concerts in All Saints Church.

For ticket information call 831-624-2046 or visit www.bachfestival.org.
Monterey County has some real firecracker events lined up for the Fourth of July this year, making it a great getaway destination right through the weekend.

In King City, Valley Heritage Day is a celebration full of old-fashioned fun for all the family. There'll be a grand parade, with horseback riders in fine costumes and puffing steam tractors. Then everyone heads for San Lorenzo Regional Park for three-legged races, water-balloon games, and the luck-o'-the-draw Bossie Bingo. Arts and crafts, quilt show, classic car rally, and near-legendary barbecue round out the day! For directions and schedule, visit www.mcarlm.org.

Meanwhile, Monterey's own Independence Day parade celebrates both the city's 231st birthday and the 400th anniversary of Sebastian Vizcaino's landing in 1602. After the parade, everyone heads to Colton Hall for a Lawn Party replete with good-old-Yankee-home-cookin' and lots of games for the younger crowd. Most folks detour by way of Cooper-Molera Adobe, to experience life as it was lived there in the 1840s. And plan to stay around until after dark, when Monterey Bay is alight with fireworks! (But be aware that special parking and street closures will be in effect from 3:00pm onwards. For more information, visit www.monterey.org, or call 831-646-3427.)
