Monterey Bay Sings the Blues
Tall Ship "Guayas" Comes to Call

But no one could remain blue long when the Monterey Bay Blues Festival comes to the Fairgrounds, June 21-23, for three superb days of blues and R&B.

With 60 performers scheduled, this is the Big Top, high-wire, three-ring circus of blues music: there are three stages on the go throughout the weekend. The Pattee Arena hosts the headliners: Roy Gaines and The O'Jays on Friday evening, Taj Mahal, Roomful of Blues, and Coco Montoya (among many others) on Saturday, and Sista Monica, John Mayall and Teddy Pendergrass (again among others) on Sunday. As you'd expect, Arena tickets sell out quickly.

Great singers and instrumentalists also appear on the two grounds stages, the Garden Stage and the Presidents Stage, which can be enjoyed by everyone who buys a Grounds Pass. Look for Maria Muldaur, Jimmie McElroy, and Big Bill Morganfield, plus dozens more, keeping the music going from 10:30am to 10:00pm.

For more information, contact the Festival Office at 831-394-2652 or visit the website:
Three-masted brigantine barques used to be fairly common sights in Monterey Baysay 250 years ago... But on June 21-25, one will reappear, when the Ecuadorian Navy training ship Guayas moors at Monterey's Wharf II.

Enjoy free self-guided tours daily from 10am-5pm, plus lots of "don't miss" special events:
  • June 21 9am An exchange of cannon fire with Monterey's Presidio when the ship approaches the wharf. Look up in the rigging: those tiny figures are the midshipmen "manning the rails"!
  • June 22 10am The officers and crew, led by the ship's band, march through downtown Monterey to Custom House Plaza for a historic reenactment of a formal Customs Clearing ceremony.
  • June 23-24 noon The ship's salsa band performsSaturday at Cannery Row, Sunday on Fisherman's Wharf.
