AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am Gray Whale

Stars Come Out to Play... Golf!

Wandering Whales Come to
Monterey Bay

The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am golf tournament is one of the great match-ups of cool-as-cucumbers pro golfers and determined-to-excel amateurs. It comes to the fabulous golf links of Pebble Beach February 3-9, 2003.

If nothing else, it means the dedicated golfers in the family can ooh and ahh at the likes of Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and David Toms, while the not-so-dedicated can wave at Bill Murray, Kevin Costner, Samuel L. Jackson, and Charles Schwab. (Players will be confirmed soon, so check the website for details.)

The Season Badge (entrance to the tournament all seven days, all three courses) costs $120 if bought before February 2 ($150 after that date). Daily tickets and exclusive Champions and Executive packages are also availablebut reserve early.

You should also reserve your accommodations early, as accommodation (especially in Carmel and Pacific Grove, the nearest towns) often sells out. Visit our Lodging page for lots of choices.
The immense cetaceansthe scientific name for the speciesmay not come right up to the end of Fisherman's Wharf, but local whale-watching boats that set off from Monterey and Moss Landing don't have any problems finding them.

While whales travel on their own internal timetables, this report from last January was pretty typical. On one day, boats reported seeing 25 grays, 600 Pacific white-sided dolphins, and 10 northern right whale dolphins; on another, 52 grays and 1900 long-beaked common dolphins; and on another, 31 grays, 2 humpbacks, 800 long-beaked common dolphins and 20 Risso’s dolphins.

The gray whale migration is the perfect excuse to book a whale-watching trip. Boats usually make one morning and one afternoon cruise in winter. Why not stay the night before and be sure to get space on a morning cruise?

Visit our Whale Watching page for lots of suggestions.
