Kites Take Flight in Monterey County
Food Festivals Tease the Palate

For anyone whose kite-flying childhood included Charlie Brown's kite-eating tree, take heart. Two festivals in May are full of fun and inspiration for all ages.

The Marina Festival of the Winds, May 11-12, takes in everything from the tiniest three-inch kite to the sturdiest hang glider during a two-day carnival of kiting and wind toys. Kids can make their own kite, or learn about windpower in the hands-on science exhibition; there's live music, food stalls, and hang-gliding competitions. Visit for details.

The Carmel Kite Festival, May 19, is especially for creative types: it offers prizes in four age categories for Best Design (original kites only) and How High (original and purchased kites). It takes place on Carmel Beach at Eighth Ave, with registration at noon; call 831-626-1255 for more details.
May is the month for food festivals in Monterey County, as land and sea marry up on the same tempting weekend.

Cooking for Solutions, hosted by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, brings together celebrity chefs with a penchant for seafood and a lively conscience. From May 17's evening reception featuring Alice Waters of Chez Panisse, through the demonstrations and tastings of May 18 and 19, it's a weekend dedicated to sustainable seafood. Call 831-644-7561, or visit

For a delicious downhome day surrounded by the fields that produce those thistle-like treats, come to the Castroville Artichoke Festival, May 18-19. They serve 'em up boiled, broiled, steamed and stuffed, just come eat and enjoy, with a side order of live music, fun and games, classic car show and more. Visit for more information.
