Romance

Couples find Monterey County the perfect place to begin a new life together or to rekindle romance. The choice is endless when it comes to beautiful places to tie the knot. Whether atop a cliff in Big Sur or in a quaint historic garden, couples find Monterey's spectacular scenery the perfect backdrop for exchanging vows.

Charming Victorian bed and breakfast inns, full-service resort hotels, and peaceful campsites among the redwoods are a few of the choices for the romantic. Packages may include soothing massages or candlelight dinners; the romantic opportunities are boundless.

Couples can enjoy a stroll along the beach at sunset or a tour of the wine country of Monterey County. For the active couple, there's golf, kayaking, scuba diving, biking, walking, horseback riding and a wealth of other recreational activities. The cultural scene offers entertainment for theater-goers, music lovers, and those who enjoy festivals.

A Presidential Affair:
Lou Henry grew up in the Midwest with a passion for the outdoors. Instead of the son her father had wanted, he got Lou, a girl who was fascinated with nature. She enjoyed fishing, horseback riding and sports. In the late 1880s, the Henrys moved to Monterey after a stay in Whittier, California. Lou attended Stanford University in Palo Alto, the first woman to major in geology. There, she met Herbert Hoover, senior assistant to her professor, the famous geologist Dr. Branner. The two fell in love. Lou completed her degree and on February 10, 1899, Lou and Herbert were married in San Carlos Church in Monterey. That afternoon, they took the train to San Francisco and then sailed for China.
