By afternoon, the wind picks up on Monterey Bay, making conditions ideal for unfurling the sails. Sailboats dot the bay with color. Charter boats afford an exquisite view of Monterey's shores. Out on the bay, marine life and birds abound. The lucky sailor might even encounter a school of dolphins.

For sailors with their own vessels, the Marina Harbormaster's Office is at Del Monte and Figueroa in Monterey.

Practice responsible sailing. Conditions can change rapidly on the bay. Check www.noaa.gov for comprehensive marine weather reports.

Carerra Sailing School and Charters has been sailing the bay since 1994. Carrera's small group sailing gives the visitor a chance to sit back and enjoy the view. Carerra books sunset sails, private charters and nature excursions. Scenic Bay Sailing offers lessons for all levels and also has sailboats to charter.

Did You Know?
The nearly 10,000-pound Point Big Sur Lighthouse lens, beacon to sailors along the coast, is on display at the Maritime Museum. Over time, kerosene, electric light bulbs and finally 1,000-watt quartzline bulbs were used to illuminate the lens, making its light equivalent to 1.8-million candlepower, seen up to 24 miles away at sea.
