Monterey County has a surprisingly busy lively arts scene. Year-round, visitors can enjoy music, theater and dance in a variety of venues. Festivals highlight all types of music, from jazz to classical, reggae to ragtime. Theaters offer large- and small-scale productions to delight audiences of every age. Local dance schools perform, sometimes with guest artists, and dance clubs often give lessons in styles like swing and country line before the floor opens for public dancing. For more information, see the performance arts listings at the Cultural Council for Monterey County or visit the Monterey Bay Theatre Alliance website.

Did You Know?
The First Theater was originally a saloon owned by Jack Swan. When Jack left the NY Volunteers at the end of the Mexican War, it became a theater.

Light-hearted Musicals Light Up 2002
The 2002 summer theater season in Monterey spans the spectrum of human moods, with upbeat musicals and darker dramas alternating in many regional theater companies' programs. Here, we highlight the melodies:
Rodgers & Hammerstein, composers of some of America's most memorable show tunes, are represented by two great revues: at The Western Stage (Salinas) by Some Enchanted Evening and at the MPC Theater Company (Monterey) by A Grand Night for Singing. Other musical offerings coming up this summer include MPC's production of Grease, Western Stage's Man of La Mancha, and a magical, open-air production of Fiddler on the Roof at Carmel's Forest Theater. Following Fiddler at Forest Theater, look for Pacific Repertory's Oliver!.
