One of the finest old houses in Salinas will be open for summer afternoon tours every Sunday between May 27 and September 4. Its significance? Novelist John Steinbeck was born and raised here, and many treasures from his childhood remain.

Flanders Mansion Nature/Heritage Walks
One of Carmel's hidden treasures, Flanders Mansion, a handsome home built in 1925, stands squarely amid another little-known gem, Mission Trails Park and nature preserve. Discover both during a two-hour guided walk; bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn afterwards. Reservations recommended.

The Art of Wah Ming Chang
The remarkable sculptor who created effects for movie classics (winning an Oscar for The Time Machine, television programs (including creatures for Star Trek), and costumes (like Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra headress) is honored at the Carmel Art Association gallery. The memorial retrospective features 70 of his intricate bronze sculptures.

Bluegrass is the perfect accompaniment for a carefree afternoon beneath tall redwoods or along a sunny beach, especially if you got there by riding a vintage steam train or old-fashioned diesel. Roaring Camp RR puts the two together for a three-day bluegrass festival.
Antique and contemporary quilts are on display at the Monterey Peninsula College, in this two-day exhibit sponsored by the Monterey Peninsulas Quilters Guild.
Mission San Antonio Fiesta
Make your way into Montereys South County and Fort Hunter Liggett (near Lake San Antonio) to attend the Fiesta Mass at this historic mission. Event starts at 11am with choir and distribution of St. Anthony's bread, followed by a BBQ, games and live music.

"The Graceful Envelope"
National Steinbeck Center, Salinas
Can an envelope be a work of art? The 135 beautifully illustrated - and stamped, cancelled and delivered - envelopes entered in this Smithsonian Institute traveling exhibition prove it's possible. Inspiring and enchanting. On the 17th, calligrapher Sara Loesch Frank introduces the exhibit with a talk on "The Handwritten Word."
Hidden Gardens Tour
Visitors come upon musicians and artists as they discover a half-dozen beautiful home gardens in Big Sur. The garden market offers handicrafts and items to make your garden special; the Captain Cooper School Garden shows kids have green thumbs, too. Reservations essential.
Movie on the Beach
Carmel Beach, at the 13th Avenue Cove, is transformed into an open-air movie theater for one night, showing the Dreamworks animated hit Shrek 2. Bring a blanket, a picnic, and be ready for fun for the whole family!
