Monterey Bay Aquarium 20th Anniversary

The Monterey Bay Aquarium first opened its doors 20 years ago, and it has been one of California's prime attractions ever since. Its exhibits are consistently innovative, appealing, and exciting to viewers of all ages, yet its educational message underlies all its activities.

Among the exhibits that are 'must-see' during the anniversary month is an all-new one entitled Sharks: Myth and Mystery.

This exhibition features two dozen living species of sharks and rays (some quite rare) in both vast tanks and in a shark touch pool. Complementing the living creatures are displays of the artwork, masks, stories and dances that humans have made to mark their meetings with sharks, collected from cultures as disparate as Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Northwest.

There are lots of special events coming up through the end of the anniversary year, including a two-day celebration marking the original opening day (October 23-24, 2004). To learn more, visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium's website at

What to do and Where to go

Monterey AttractionsFrom the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium to the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, Monterey County offers an endless list of fantastic things to see and do, for both the first-time and the regular visitor. With so many options, it's best to plan your itinerary in advance, so you don't miss the attractions you really want to see. This website can help you do just that.

History buffs will enjoy walking Monterey's Path of History, looking for landmarks like Custom House, Cooper-Molera Adobe, and The House of the Blue Gate. If you love the outdoors, go tide pooling along the rocky shore, ride horseback over open meadows, or hike in one of our many nature preserves. For a more romantic getaway, indulge in one of our many pampering spas or hideaway resorts.

Spiritual speakers might find inspiration at Esalen in Big Sur, or by walking the new labyrinth near the mouth of Carmel Valley. Shoppers discover something in every price range, with dozens of local 'treasures' across the county. And families traveling with the kids should check out our Family and Children link for a list of great activities and attractions that enthrall adults and youngsters alike.

Don't worry if you can't fit it all in on one trip. It just means you now have a great excuse to return time and time again!
