This exciting week kicks off with a Caber Parade featuring Scottish dancers, bagpipers and drummers on Sunday, July 1 along Carmel’s famous Ocean Avenue. The week continues with a Pub Night, Celtic Concert, and the 40th Annual Monterey Scottish Games and Celtic Festival held at the pastoral Monterey County Toro Park on Saturday and Sunday, July 7 and 8. The festival will feature a wide variety of Scottish and Irish musicians, massed pipe bands on parade, Scottish and Highland dancers, British food and crafts, thrilling athletic events and much, much more.

Don’t miss this exhibit at Seaside City Hall’s Walter Lee Avery Art Gallery. Focused on creating awareness of the rich historical legacy of Seaside’s diverse population, the exhibit features photographs, ephemera, art, and artifacts that represent the African Americans, Filipino Americans, Japanese Americans, and Mexican Americans who have lived in Seaside since its incorporation to present day.

The Carmel Art Association presents a group show in the Beardsley Room featuring three award-winning artists with distinct styles and subject matters: Roianne Hart showcases watercolor florals, figures and landscapes with a summer theme; Gerard Martin’s most recent oils portray California ranch landscapes with horses and barnyard animals, and Peggy Jelmini features impressionistic and abstract landscapes in oil and watercolor. The Gallery Showcase in the Segal Room features Reed Farrington, whose newest loosely-painted oils are a continuing progression of his “swimmer series” and Keith Lindberg, who showcases figurative works saturated with vivid color in oil on canvas.

Each year, the Carmel Heritage Society makes it possible for the public to visit a small selection of homes representative of Carmel’s heritage. This year’s tour includes the remarkable Frank Lloyd Wright house, the new, spacious “Carefree Sur Mer”, and the redwood studio-home built in 1905 by distinguished photographer Arnold Genthe. The 2007 tour also includes one of the oldest homes in Carmel, built in 1888 for Davenport Bromfield, Carmel’s first land surveyor.
